Transitional Kitchen Design and Remodel Project

Indianapolis is fortunate to offer lots of affordable housing in many, many styles. Our client fell in love with and purchased a beautiful home with great bones near downtown Indy, but she didn’t love the outdated spaces. The HER Home Design team was excited to help her create the transitional kitchen design and remodeling project she could be proud of in her new home.

Kitchen and bathroom design and remodeling are among our favorite projects at HER Home Design LLC, so we are THRILLED to share with you the details of this transitional kitchen design and remodeling project. This project also included a home furnishings update of the main floor and master bedroom as well as wall color and new lighting throughout. See the home decor portion of the project HERE.

    The Client
The client for this project is an empty-nester mom who downsized into a single-family home built in the 1950s and renovated for the first time back in 2005. Her new home features about 2,500 sq. ft. with three bedrooms and 1.5 baths. It rests nicely on a quiet street in Indy’s popular Old Northside neighborhood near downtown.

    The Design Challenge
This home was updated back in the 2000s before the notion of “open-concept” really became a trend. The spaces were right-sized but closed off. Although the home had great bones, the kitchen was dark and drab and lacked the functional spaces and storage today’s buyer is looking for in a new home. The wall and floor colors were dark and it was hard to get in natural light, which the homeowner really wanted.

Here are some images of what the kitchen looked like before:

    The Solution
With a healthy budget and a ton of great ideas from the homeowners, we got right to the drawing board and we’re excited to present our design plan for the makeover to our client. Our design plan included the following items:

    • A super functional kitchen featuring plenty of storage and new coffee bar
    • An updated transitional design that is functional and beautiful for the homeowner
    • A newly created sitting area with a view to the patio on the opposite side of the kitchen
    • A large island with plenty of seating
    • Ceramic tile floors
    • New paint scrubbable paint in a calm, relaxing tone
    • Brand new modern two-toned cabinetry
    • A larger kitchen sink and prep sink with touch faucet
    • State-of-the-art luxury appliances
    • Luxury granite countertops
    • New LED overhead recessed lighting
    • New pendant lighting throughout
    • Neutral vertical direction backsplash tile
    • New state-of-the-art appliances
    • New home furnishings including chairs and bar stools in the kitchen

The Final Kitchen Design and Remodel Project
The homeowner loves her new transitional kitchen design. The two-toned sage and walnut-stained cabinetry is gorgeous and offer plenty of storage. The widened kitchen offers a better view of both the front and back of the house, plus it gave us room to install a cool little coffee bar. It’s light, bright and most of all… functional!
